Cowardice asks the question - is it safe? Expediency asks the question - is it politic? Vanity asks the question - is it popular? But conscience asks the question - is it right? And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular; but one must take it BECAUSE it is right.

In religion and politics, people's beliefs and convictions are in almost every case gotten at second-hand, and without examination, from authorities who have not themselves examined the questions at issue, but have taken them at second-hand from other non-examiners, whose opinions about them were not worth a brass farthing.

If clothes is a status symbol, and screwed up jeans are in, then I must kick serious ass. I've got plenty of jeans covered in paint or chemically bleached, and I probably paid about $100 for all of them put together (6 pair) over the course of 5 years or so. It's nice to know that if you want to look rich, all you have to do is be poor.

It’s still common to see procedures that pull data out of an object to do something, when that behavior would better fit in the object itself - a violation of the pragmatic programmers principle of ‘Tell Don’t Ask’.
Martin Fowler
The kinds of accessors I cautioned against are the proxy methods that do nothing more than expose otherwise private member variables. Yes, get and set are verbs but even if they were named read and write they would still be nothing more than proxies that serve no real purpose. Just naming a function with a verb does not mean it conforms to the spirit of OO design. It’s the habit of automatically writing accessors instead of thinking about actions on objects that I am going on about, not whether accessors should ever be used or not.
Greg Jorgensen
Lots of programmers are still writing getters and setters that serve only to make private members public, because they are mindlessly following some half-understood rules that say “public members are bad” and assuming accessors are the answer because their IDE writes them automatically. So the message is not getting through.
Greg Jorgensen
Using IE isn't all that bad, other than the feeling it gives me of being dirty and exposed like a girl doing a webcam show to make money for baby formula.

It all started when, after a game, soccer pro David Beckham signed and handed his jersey to a pair of friends, ages 9 and 10, neither of whom wanted to let go of it. A dispute that should have been resolved by upper body strength, a ripped jersey and an important moral lesson about sharing, turned legal when the parents brought in lawyers to decide exactly which kid grabbed the jersey first.

You forgot the dark horse in this set of degrees… the MRS degree. This is when attractive chicks go to college with the sole intention of finding a smart guy majoring in a lucrative field and marrying him. She lures him in saying that she is undecided at the moment and wants to “get to know you better.” If a college chick says this without any alcohol in her, run for the hills. She only does this because she realizes that she’s too much of a dumbass to make it on her own and has too much dignity to blowjob her way to the top (but just enough dignity to ride some dude’s coattails), so she finds the nearest soon-to-be-successful guy out there and leeches onto him for all it’s worth. A few kids and car payments later, here comes a divorce (cue the mentally distressed and emotionally abused card) and she is instantly loaded with half of the poor guy’s estate. Add a vanity license plate that says “WAS HIS” for added effect and cruelty.

Re: Sex and the City. Did anybody else see Sarah Jessica Parker when she was on Conan? He asked her if she has open discussions about sex in real life, and she began to stutter and stammer "I uh. . .I uh. . .sex is a private thing and i'd never talk about it." People began to laugh because she became so nervous, and at one point she said that she forgot what she was talking about because she "blacked out." The point: The show is the complete opposite of reality! Women are NOT really like what the writers (who are flamboyant homosexuals, not women) make it seem like. The sad thing is that women view this and strive to be this way; they go out with their friends and talk loudly about sex (i've had to endure a 30-something woman talking about her vibrator while sitting in Denny's awhile back).

"Gameplay is king, performance is second, and graphics are somewhere after that." Totally true. I haven't enjoyed ANY of the maps that shipped with UT3. But I love the 30+ community-made maps I've downloaded. All run at 50+ frames per second on my system. "...and when Left 4 Dead comes out you want to run it at its highest resolution with killer framerates, and call your buddies over for a beer and make them all drool over your system" If anything does kill PC gaming, it will be this. What's the point of calling friends over to WATCH? We want to be able to hook up a 2nd USB Keyboard & Mouse or a gamepad and play some split-screen deathmatch! There is NO EXCUSE! Golden Eye on the weak-ass Nintendo64 had split screen deathmatch. TONS of racing games have split-screen racing. I think Halo had quad-screen multiplayer didn't it? My PC beats the snot out of the old X-BOX yet I can't play split screen Halo but I can on the x-box. Same with tons of other games. ALL the consoles, ESPECIALLY THE WII, are so popular because 4 or 8 people can crowd around it and have fun TOGETHER! People have 2 video cards with 2 video outputs each, 8 usb ports, bluetooth and yet with all these outputs and inputs and quad core processing power and gigs and gigs of ram we PC Gamers can't friggin share a game with friends in the same room!!! Sucks.

We have in this Country one of the most corrupt institutions the world has ever known. I refer to the Federal Reserve Board and the Federal Reserve Banks. . . . This evil institution has impoverished and ruined the people of the United States. . . . Some people think the Federal Reserve Banks are United States Government institutions. They are private credit monopolies, which, prey upon the people of the United States for the Benefit of themselves and their foreign customers. ..." "The Federal Reserve (Banks) are one of the most corrupt institutions, the world has ever seen. There is not a man, within the sound of my voice, who does not know that this Nation is run by the International Bankers". "Mr. Chairman, we have in this country one of the most corrupt institutions the world has ever known. I refer to the Federal Reserve Board and the Federal Reserve Banks, hereinafter called the Fed. The Fed has cheated the Government of the United States and the people of the United States out of enough money to pay the Nation's debt.... The wealth of these United States and the working capital have been taken away from them and has either been locked in the vaults of certain banks and the great corporations or exported to foreign countries for the benefit of foreign customers of these banks and corporations. So far as the people of the United States are concerned, the cupboard is bare." "When the Federal Reserve Act was passed, the people of these United States did not perceive that a world banking system was being set up here. A super-state controlled by international bankers and industrialists...acting together to enslave the world...Every effort has been made by the Fed to conceal its powers but the truth is--the Fed has usurped the government.
CONGRESSMAN LOUIS T. McFADDEN and former Chairman of the Committee on Banking and Currency
Those few who can understand the system (check book money and credit) will either be so interested in its profits, or so dependent on it favors, that there will be little opposition from that class, while on the other hand, the great body of people mentally incapable of comprehending the tremendous advantage that capital derives from the system, will bear it burdens without complaint, and perhaps without even suspecting that the system is inimical to their interests.
ROTHSCHILDS BROS. OF LONDON
"The system of banking we have both equally and ever reprobated. I contemplate it as a blot left in all our constitutions, which, if not covered, will end in their destruction, ... I sincerely believe, with you, that banking establishments are more dangerous than standing armies; and that the principle of spending money to be paid by posterity, under the name of funding, is but swindling futurity on a large scale." "The eyes of our citizens are not sufficiently open to the true cause of our distress. They ascribe them to everything but their true cause, the banking system; a system which if it could do good in any form is yet so certain of leading to abuse as to be utterly incompatible with the public safety and prosperity. I sincerely believe that banking establishments are more dangerous than standing armies... and that the principle of spending money to be paid by posterity, under the name of funding, is but swindling futurity on a large scale." "... We must not let our rulers load us with perpetual debt...If we run into such debts as that we must be taxed in our meat and in our drink, in our necessities and comforts, in our labors and in our amusements, for our callings and our creeds...our people...must come to labor 16 hours in the 24, give the earnings of 15 of these to the government for their debts and daily expenses; and the 16th being insufficient to afford us bread,...We have no time to think, no means of calling the mis-managers to account; but be glad to obtain subsistence by hiring ourselves, to rivet their chains on the necks of our fellow sufferers. Our land holders, too...retaining indeed the title and stewardship of estates called theirs, but held really in trust for the treasury, . . .this is the tendency of all human governments. A departure from principle becomes a precedent for a second; that second for a third; and so on, till the bulk of society is reduced to mere automatons of misery, to have no sensibilities left but for sinning and suffering...And the fore horse of this frightful team is public debt. Taxation follows that, and in it's train, wretchedness and oppression." "I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. Already they have raised up a money aristocracy that has set the government at defiance. This issuing power should be taken from the banks and restored to the people to whom it properly belongs. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around them will deprive the people of all property until their children will wake up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered. I hope we shall crush in its birth the aristocracy of the moneyed corporations which already dare to challenge our Government to a trial of strength and bid defiance to the laws of our country" "I sincerely believe ... that banking establishments are more dangerous than standing armies, and that the principle of spending money to be paid by posterity under the name of funding is but swindling futurity on a large scale." I place economy among the first and important virtues, and public debt as the greatest of dangers. To preserve our independence, we must not let our rulers load us with perpetual debt. We must make our choice between economy and liberty, or profusion and servitude. If we can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of caring for them, they will be happy. "The Central Bank is an institution of the most deadly hostility existing against the principles and form of our Constitution."

I believe that Jesus's side kick was a platypus. Two thousand years ago, the Europeans were unfamiliar with the platypus. So a symbol of Easter became an Easter Bunny. But one that brought eggs. And occasionally the bunny was replaced by a duckling, a creature with a duckbill and webbed feet. Had the early Europeans known about this strange Australian mammal, they would have recognized Jesus's sidekick for what he was, and the incorrectly interpreted story of the Easter Bunny would not have spread through the world.

I had just recently learned that they also had poisonous barbs on their back feet. What is surprising that it is one of the most painful venoms on the planet. A gentleman that had been stuck by a platypus had also been struck by shrapnel in World War II. He said if he had to choose between the two, it would be the grenade. And what I heard about the primary use of that venom is that it is for immobilizing a swimming female, who will proceed to go limp and float helplessly, so that he can get his freak on. The platypus is Nature's date-rapist.
Europeans always consider themselves vastly superior to any other race they encounter since they can lie, cheat, steal, and litigate (marks of a civilized culture, they say) whereas all the aboriginals can do is happily survive being left in the middle of a vast red-hot desert, equipped with a stick.

The point is- people will perceive you by the way you conduct yourself. This country has seen great figures of all colors, and it was due to the content of their character and the ethics of their behavior. I disagree with Mr. Cosby's viewpoint that "blacks lost to whites", which is a bit too obtuse for my taste. If anything, he should be stressing the positives- I mean he was the quintessential rags-to-riches story, and it was because of his work ethic and determination (and an ungodly affinity for all things pudding). Suffice it to say that there is "trash" of every color, and you can be a part of that and cast blame unto others, or you can step up and contribute to society and be embraced. Not the easiest route, but certainly one that will garner the admiration and respect of your fellow countrymen.

I think what's even funnier than that is the spread of American hip-hop culture across the rest of the world. Here in the UK you see many young black kids who have adopted this culture thinking that thug-culture is black, that they are embracing who they are. Historically, African culture would be a more apt reconciliation with forefather's ideals but many fail to recognise this, associating foreign & American-born ideals as somehow connected to their ancestry. I don't see thug/hip-hop culture being inherently black though.. More that this is simply another cultural manifestation of poor social ideals, responsibility and a lack of inherent thought. Here, it is 'scally' or 'chav' culture which is primarily white but otherwise transcends race, unfortunately incorporating the same lack of moral comprehension; glamorising violence, theft, so-called 'bling' as gaudy symbols of perceived wealth. The parallels between these two entirely foreign cultures are remarkably apparent with the only major differences being that rap culture has its figure-heads, rap stars. The reason for these shared ideals though is that they are born of the same seeds. Impoverished regions, frustrated youth and a society that enforces the idea that monetary wealth is the be-all-and-end-all. I grew up with these kids, on a rough estate, most hanging on the streets because they couldn't stand to be at home. Education was never upheld there and so most never bothered to uphold in their own lives. With no qualifications or skills, they were quickly pigeonholed as lost causes and this lack of care from wider society eventually manifests itself as an entire culture of young people who have given up on themselves feeling that the only way they can be successful is by acting the way people expect them to act. I agree largely with what Cosby is arguing but this goes beyond race. This culture of young people who shirk their social responsibility, adopting criminal and morally bereft attitudes appear across the globe in every race and from Compton to Kielce, Poland and it all begins at home! Broken homes (in every sense of the word) conceive broken children and education is the silver-bullet by which society WILL be saved. We are all just people, the divisions we have draw up to separate us are just that, born of our own creation. We can make this a better place for all but it requires more than simply attempting to fix one's own immediate culture, it requires us to think in a wider sense, recognising that we are all one people stricken with the same problems. Once we get over the ego of black and white I think we can actually move forward because this isn't about black people being left behind, it's about individuals helping individuals.

I walked with four or five other black men, and all along the way black women stood on porches or out on the street, shouting, clapping, cheering. For us, Farrakhan’s opinions on the Jews mostly seemed beside the point; what stuck was the chance to assert our humanity and our manhood by marching on the Mall, and not acting like we were all fresh out of San Quentin. We lived in the shadow of the ’80s crack era. So many of us had been jailed or were on our way. So many of us were fathers in biology only. We believed ourselves disgraced and clung to the march as a public statement: the time had come to grow up.

What do record producers think when they churn out that gangsta rap with antisocial, women-hating messages? Do they think that black male youth won’t act out what they have repeated since they were old enough to listen?

The white man is too intelligent to let someone else come and gain control of the economy of his community, But you will let anybody come in and take control of the economy of your community, control the housing, control the education, control the jobs, control the businesses, under the pretext that you want to integrate. No, you’re out of your mind.

The greatest stumbling block in the way of progress in the race has invariably come from within the race itself, The monkey wrench of destruction as thrown into the cog of Negro Progress, is not thrown so much by the outsider as by the very fellow who is in our fold, and who should be the first to grease the wheel of progress rather than seeking to impede.

Nobody would hire a foreigner in a bank if a Bahamian could read and write fluently, do math properly, speak two languages, be punctual and professional - foreigners cost a company a hell of a lot more. What is so often labeled as prejudice or foreign elitism, is more often than not just the truth of a global world staring us in the face. It is up to us, it always has been and it always will be. The choice is something each and every Bahamian must make. To educate oneself, or not.

Bottled water is regulated for safety, but it's a tricky thing. The EPA regulates tap water, while the FDA oversees bottled. Yet FDA oversight doesn't apply to water packaged and sold within the same state, leaving some 60 to 70 percent of bottled water, including the contents of watercooler jugs, free of FDA regulation

More than 50 years after Brown v. Board of Education ended de jure racial segregation in this country, poor urban blacks continue to be a group apart, plagued by disproportionately high rates of crime, incarceration, drug use, and poor health. Inner-city black children go to bad schools, live in substandard housing, eat bad food, are disproportionately raised by single mothers, and are exposed to a pathological street culture in which aggressive demands for "respect," ugly misogyny and the crudest markers of male machismo are valorized, while education, self-discipline and personal responsibility are dismissed as "acting white."

The Hebrew word that is translated as "day" in the creation story is regularly used in other sections of the Bible as connoting an unspecified length of time, such the "The DAY of the Lord", meaning the time when the coming Messiah rules the earth. A Christian can believe in creation taking place over a long period of time without compromising his belief in the infallibility of scripture.

My old pastor said that the fossils were angels that had been expelled from heaven before the 'perfection' of earth. The reason he said that explained the fossils strange appearance was because all over the bible, it describes supernatural beings as marvelous and extravagant creatures: e.g. the 10 horned, multi-eyed satan, the lion people in revelation etc. He also said that they could have been 'beta' animals that werent ready when go decided to 'go gold.' its plausible, but I like evolution better, and hey, Im still christian.

Besides this advice being almost 4 years old, the proper way to do this is using the "SQL_CALC_FOUND_ROWS" predicate instead of running two queries - from the MySQL Manual: "SQL_CALC_FOUND_ROWS tells MySQL to calculate how many rows there would be in the result set, disregarding any LIMIT clause. The number of rows can then be retrieved with SELECT FOUND_ROWS(). See Section 12.9.3, 'Information Functions'."

I can please only one person per day. Today is not your day. Tomorrow isn't looking good either.
Agnosticism is skepticism, doubt which demands proof. Recognizing that God's existence is a matter of faith which by definition can never be proven, true agnostics admit that they don't know whether God(s) exist(s). Even those of us with faith are agnostics, in the purely rational sense that we likewise recognize our faith is unprovable (that's why we call it "faith," rather than "knowledge"). Many of the faithful are not comfortable with that, but that's what the word MEANS. Atheists affirmatively believe that God does not exist. There is no proof for the absence of God. Proof that the Biblical creations stories are not true does not disprove the existence of God. It is logically impossible to prove the negative proposition that "There is no God," and it is impossible to gather empirical evidence that will prove there is no God. Atheists must base their position on faith, rather than reason or evidence. I did not intend to stir up so much dispute. I just wanted to point out that most people who call themselves atheist are really agnostics who picked the wrong descriptive label, through a failure to understand the difference. I find it a bit amusing that people feel compelled to re-define the word "atheist," or rationalize its dishonest use, rather than just switch to the label that more accurately describes their views. Specific responses: Zuckerfrosch, your first point is a good one, but your second point does not hold up to scrutiny. You start off talking about atheism, but the position you defend is actually agnosticism. You actually help to prove my point. Was that your intent? Phosphorious, I am flabbergasted by your assertion that we have "enough evidence to reasonably believe there is no God." What "evidence" could you possibly be talking about? Evidence that the Biblical creation stories are just flat wrong is still not the same as evidence that God does not exist. I am quite comfortable believing in the Big Bang, the modern updates to Darwinism (to the extent I've been able to keep up with them), and science in general. None of that "evidence" threatens my faith, precisely because it is "faith." Faith is irrational. I happen to believe that this particular irrationality is relatively harmless, healthy, and spiritually nutritious.

hmmm. how can I put this... If everyone in the world stopped using internet explorer and started using ANY other web browser that was actually good (like firefox), web designers like me could do twice as much work in half the time and double the quality. This results in the cost of websites being cheaper, the time it takes for a page to load to be shorter, the amount of fancy/cool/useful to the visitor stuff we have the freedom to create would be greater and resulting in a better web browsing experience for everybody (except those still using 6 year old Internet Explorer) But to be more specific, all programs are not perfect. They have "security holes" that maybe someday some evil group of Russian hackers will figure out how to use to infect your computer with viruses or other evil things. Firefox 2 fixes many security holes that existed in version 1.5. Internet Explorer on the other hand still has security holes that existed from waaay back in 2003 or earlier that have yet to be fixed. Seems the only fix a flaw when large numbers of people start having their credit card info stolen through a particular flaw in IE. So then they'll fix that one flaw and continue to ignore the rest. Also I hear they made improvements to the extensions system. Have you ever tried firefox extensions? They're great. They do all sorts of things. If you ever visit a site that won't let you in because you're not in IE, theres an extension that makes firefox lie to the website and convince it that you're using IE and it'll let you in. If there's a site that looks messed up in firefox there's an extension that will open a new tab in firefox and that tab will display the site using the "guts" of the IE program. It's practically IE in a firefox tab. If you ever visit a popular but members only website like the new york times or blackplanet or youtube or hi-5 and you really aren't in the mood for signing up, there's an extenstion called bugmenot that will log you in automatically with somebody elses account. Vista isn't that bad once you tweak it. The first things I have been doing with the beta/rc versions are: * Disable Glass/Transparency and Desktop Composition (Using the advanced system settings dialog which they buried) * Switch to the "Aero Basic" theme (Yes, this is a seperate step) * Remove the useless 4 pixel "border padding" on windows * Get rid of the Segoe UI font (I use Tahoma) and tweak the font sizes * Put Run back on the Start Menu and switch the start menu and tweak a few other bits on it * Disable UAC (I don't trust it) * Enable DEP (x64 only) for "All Programs and Services" (It has mitigated quite a few of the XP critical issues recently). I add a few executables that don't work with it on (printer software) to the exception list * Disable IE7's phishing protection (for privacy reasons) * Disable the built in Firewall (i'm behind a well managed router), Automatic Updates (I'm in a routine for the 2nd tuesday of the month and read Slashdot so it's no big deal for me) and some other miscellaneous security warnings. * Switch my account to a Limited User account (By adding it to Users and removing from Administrators groups using MMC) .... once again MS has just chosen shitty defaults.

I've tried on several occasions to find what I figure must be an existing term, but you'd be surprised how hard it is to find the name of an argument fallacy just from the description. (Logical fallacies are much better covered and you can usually just browse down one of the many lists, but I've had a harder time finding the purely argument fallacies that aren't really logical fallacies. In this case, it's not a logical fallacy because both sides may be using impeccable logic, within their own chosen axioms.)

Be careful if you make a woman cry, because God counts her tears. The woman came from a mans` rib. Not from his feet to be walked on. Not from his head to be superior, but from the side to be equal. Under the arm to be protected, and next to the heart to be loved.

American contestant Po-Shen Loh recalled recently happening upon an afternoon TV cartoon aimed at toddlers, in which a stereotypically brainy student was being teased by his classmates. "They were making fun of the smart one," he sighed. "If this is what American kids are watching even before they know any better, it can't help but affect them later on."

I read about a "method" that many young people are using to combat the spread of AIDS. Most understand that fluids transfer the AIDS virus so they believe that "dry sex" will alleviate the problem of AIDS. To have "dry sex" young women are encouraged to put talcum powder, comet powder cleaner, and other caustic powders into their vaginas.

Design ability is so hard to measure that you can't even trust the design world's internal standards. You can't assume that someone with a degree in design is any good at design, or that an eminent designer is any better than his peers. If that worked, any company could build products as good as Apple's just by hiring sufficiently qualified designers.
